Basstard is a multi-sampled instrument focused on recording the gradual destruction of a full-scale orchestral bass. The library contains four core categories of sounds: “Tonal”, “Percussive”, “FX” and “Grooves”. The tonal category covers more traditional multi-sampled articulations like plucked, staccato, rubber mallet on strings, regular drum stick on strings, fork on strings and other tool that could be used for tonal sampling.
The percussive category contains a variety of heavy round-robin based articulations playing the instrument like a drum kit (containing 6-10 round robin articulations). The FX category has a gruesome amount of FX made with anything from bowing bass with baseball bat, using a powerdrill on the strings and recording sustained notes from it – to actually powerdrilling the bass and reconfigure the instrument – separating its neck from its body and essentially reassemble the instrument in horrible ways. The Groove category contains unique tempo-synched BPM-based grooves recorded at several core tempos (80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130, 140).
The end-result is a deep-sampled instrument that pushes the concept of orchestral bass into a more dark, gritty, percussive and disturbing territory.

The Basstard contains a large section of unconventional multi-samples. We recorded the upright bass both as a plucked and percussive instrument – using anything from rubbet mallets, regular drum sticks, to forks, bows, baseball bats and yes – powerdrills. The end-result is a highly percussive type of bass – which is awesome for those gritty motion picturesque grooves or alternative styles of music. Its one big, experimental bass project, that culminated in the death of the basstard.

The Basstard is also a fascinating percussive rhythm instrument and contains a large segment of over 300 live-groove elements, which can be used together with the multi-samples too. The grooves were uniquely recorded at several core tempos (80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130, 140) and programmed to match your DAW host-tempo to perfection.
The Real-Time Effects of Basstard

The Basstard also contains a custom real-time FX system, which allows you to push things even further. The effects are laid out as keyswitches on your keyboard and can be triggered in real-time on top of the samples – allowing you to use the effects in a more direct and rhythmic fashion. The effects contain Delay, Bitcrusher/LOFI, Fuzz/Distortion, Rotator and a large set of custom convolution impulses from the private 8Dio catalogue.
